Alleviating emotions of depression and anxiety with a playlist we personalized for you

Harmonyheal is a pilot project that analyzes classical music through an audio analysis program built upon a medical literature review. Our model was designed with the aim to create a tailor-made playlist of classical pieces to reduce your depressive and anxious moods.

Our mission, and how our model works
The Harmonyheal team aims to contribute as much to society as possible with our expertise in our respective fields. Through our combined passion in neuroscience, music, and computer science, we aimed to crack the code beneath why classical songs stood the test of time. Through a medical literature review, we have been able to identify four components in classical music which contributes the most to whether a piece is has therapeutic qualities or not, and those four features are spectral flux (the intensity of a song), spectral rolloff (its pitch), accented beats, and its tempo. We have designed an audio analysis program to extract these features hidden within each classical piece to evaluate its effectiveness in reducing depressive or anxious moods through a mathematical model. You can download code here. Songs that have been evaluated by the computer program as effective in helping with depressive or anxious moods through our model will go into the website’s database, and as the user answers the questionnaire the website will run the response through a second mathematical model to provide the most compatible pieces for each user according to their severity of depression or anxiety based on the questionnaire.

Note*

Due to the fact that this is a pilot project that has not been validated in terms of research methodology, we lack a statistically significant result from clinical research. This was entirely based on implications from evidence in past papers and is not a valid medical tool. The Harmonyheal team greatly looks forward to seeing the idea behind our project used as a basis for further research, and we require that users always give a truthful assessment of their situation in the questionnaires. If your answer reveals that you are at sufficient risk of severe depression or anxiety, this website is not a suitable tool for your condition and you are strongly advised to immediately consult a professional.

How It Works

The website will provide you with a questionnaire interface where you have to fill in PHQ-9 and GAD-7 questionnaires, and the website will provide you with a personalized playlist of classical pieces to help with your mood. The process can be summarized into four steps:

01.

Self-evaluation

Answer the two questionnaires truthfully.

02.

Analysis

The program will run your response through a model.

03.

Output

The interface will show you a list of the songs best suited for you.

04.
